Leaving the comfort of a secure job is never an easy decision, especially when you're walking away from something often referred to as "the golden handcuffs." In the legal industry, these handcuffs are not only golden but intricately woven with the prestige and stability of being part of an established law firm. So why did I leave big law, a global business that I helped launch in the Australian market, to embark on a new path as a mediator and leadership coach?
For me, the decision wasn't just about financial readiness to take a risk, although that was a pragmatic reason. It was more about a deep-seated need for change and challenge. As time went by, I found myself getting too comfortable in my role, and I realised that comfort wasn't where I wanted to be. I needed an environment that pushed me, an opportunity to grow in different directions.
The Specialisation Trap
In a specialised field of law, particularly as a partner, you become highly competent in certain areas. While it’s satisfying to solve complex problems and collaborate with clients, it often starts to feel repetitive. There's a relentless need to produce results, to constantly help and be present, leaving little room for creativity. The routine, though rewarding, can stifle innovation and personal growth.
Rediscovering My Passions
When contemplating my next move, I decided to focus on the aspects of my previous role that truly resonated with me. As an insurance partner and lawyer, I loved resolving claims and negotiating fair outcomes. Equally, I found great joy in mentoring others, helping them grow and succeed. These passions became the foundation of my new business, Evolve Resolve, where I now thrive as a mediator and a leadership coach.
With Evolve Resolve, I crafted a business that integrates my love for mediation and leadership development. My work now centres on professional services, where I have the privilege of working closely with individuals and small groups, particularly those comprising the next generation of leaders. It’s incredibly rewarding to guide others through their growth journeys, drawing from my own experiences in big law.
The Power of a Bigger Voice
The leap from big law has also allowed me to explore new avenues like podcasting. This platform has given me the opportunity to expand my voice beyond one-on-one interactions, reaching a broader audience eager for insights and inspiration. Through my podcast, "The Resolution Room," I aim to share my journey and insights, inviting others to explore similar paths of personal growth and professional satisfaction.
In shedding those golden handcuffs, I’ve embraced a life that’s richer in creativity and personal fulfilment. I hope you'll join me in exploring the possibilities that lie in embracing change and unleashing your own potential. Thanks for being part of my journey.
I regularly share short insights on mediation, negotiation and all things leadership. From how to optimise success in negotiations, to the skillset required to sustain high team performance and promote resilience. I share these video reflections, drawing from my experience both as a former leader in professional services and now as a mediator and leadership coach.
"Damien is an incredible Mediator. He is experienced, is always across the brief and has a depth of legal knowledge that can assist the parties to navigate even the most complex issues to reach a resolution. Damien is my first choice for any Mediation, especially for vulnerable plaintiff’s feeling overwhelmed by the process as they are immediately comforted by his affable and empathetic nature.”
Damien was engaged as an Executive Coach in our business to navigate a half-decade of poor habits, realign our leadership team and position us for a strategic exit.Facilitating an executive workshop was instrumental in resolving internal conflicts and realigning us to a collective focus on future opportunities.
I have especially appreciated your logical and calm approach to problem solving, and I have valued your methodical and composed demeanour in tackling complex issues. You have not only equipped me with effective strategies but also instilled a sense of confidence and clarity in my own decision making processes.
